Many transmission failures occur before the vehicle even leaves the shop—not because of defective parts, but due to improper installation. At OS Transmissions, we remanufacture transmissions and provide them in top working condition, but once they leave our shop, their longevity depends on proper handling. Incorrect torque converter installation, failing to prefill the transmission with oil, and neglecting to flush the cooler lines can result in serious damage—including a burned-up pump, overheating, or even complete transmission failure.
To help you avoid costly mistakes, voided warranties, and unnecessary downtime, we’re breaking down the most crucial steps to ensure a trouble-free installation.

1. Proper Torque Converter Installation: Three Clicks to Success
One of the biggest mistakes mechanics make is not fully seating the torque converter before installing the transmission. If the converter isn’t properly aligned with the pump, it can cause immediate and catastrophic failure.
How to Correctly Install a Torque Converter:
1. Fill the torque converter with transmission oil before installation (about a quart, depending on the size).
2. Gently align the torque converter with the input shaft and pump gear inside the transmission.
3. Rotate and push the torque converter inward until you feel three distinct engagement clicks:
• First Click: Splines engage with the input shaft.
• Second Click: Stator support engages with the converter hub.
• Third Click: The converter seats fully into the pump gear.
⚠️ Important: Before bolting the transmission to the engine, ensure that the torque converter spins freely and sits slightly recessed from the bellhousing edge. If it’s flush or sticking out, it’s not fully engaged and will damage the pump upon startup.

2. Prefill the Transmission with Oil – Avoid a Dry Start
Starting a transmission without fluid inside is one of the fastest ways to destroy it. Even if the torque converter is properly installed, a dry start can cause severe friction damage to internal components.
Steps to Avoid Dry Start Damage:
1. Before installation, pour some transmission fluid into the torque converter.
2. Once the transmission is installed, fill the pan with fluid before starting the engine.
3. Crank the engine in neutral (if possible) for a few seconds to circulate fluid before full engagement.
4. Always check and top off the fluid level once the transmission warms up.

3. Clean Transmission Cooler Lines – No Leftover Debris!
Dirty or clogged cooler lines can send debris from the old transmission straight into the new one, leading to overheating, pressure loss, and internal failure. Flushing the lines is essential for a proper install.
How to Flush Transmission Cooler Lines:
1. Use a specialized transmission cooler flush solvent or a compatible cleaner.
2. Disconnect the cooler lines and flush them from both ends using compressed air or a flushing tool.
3. Ensure clean fluid flows through before reconnecting.
4. Consider replacing the cooler if excessive debris is present.

4. Warranty Policy – Proper Installation is Your Responsibility
We stand behind our transmission remanufacturing, but once a transmission leaves our shop, it is the customer’s responsibility to install it correctly.
Warranty Terms:
• Improper torque converter installation, failure to prefill the transmission, or failure to clean the cooler lines will void the warranty.
• If a transmission is returned damaged due to improper installation, the warranty is void, and a reservice fee plus the cost of damaged parts will apply.
• OS Transmissions does not provide vehicle installation services or post-installation inspections. Any additional diagnostics will incur a fee.
If customer selects remanufactured Torque Converter (TC) option for rebuild tier then warranty will be reduced to 6 months compared to selecting Brand New (varies by Make & Model of vehicle) option will maintain its 12 month or 12,000 miles which ever comes first policy.
